we ♥ 2 raqs
Tümay Kılınçel
Based on raqs shari, the so-called belly dance or oriental dance, "we ♥ 2 raqs" confronts and deconstructs orientalist and colonialist imagery. In this choreographic performance dancers Dina Abdelhafez, The Darvish, Lia Pavlidis, Suzan Demircan, Marilyn Nova White create a collective body of raqs through their interpretation of oriental dance and divergent genres such as tribal fusion, American tribal style, fusion, voguing, baladi and contemporary dance. Kanun player Dima Dawood, percussionist Sultan Kara and singer Leila Moon accompany them with music. After the solo work "Dansöz", dancer and choreographer Tümay Kılınçel and dramaturg Berna Kurt now take their raqs collaboration further, recontextualising dance as a feminist, self-empowering practice.
